Oral History Research: Library of Congress
COVID-19 American History Project
The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress contracted Dismantle to conduct oral history fieldwork as part of its COVID-19 American History Project. Our focus: the hospitality workers of greater New Orleans — bartenders, hotel and restaurant workers, DJs and performers, tour guides and taxi drivers — and their experiences of the pandemic.
Over six months, we interviewed 20 workers, designing the project to ensure our participant sample was representative of the region’s industry and demographic mix. We created a comfortable, informed environment for each interview — meeting participants where they were, whether that meant a central field office or their own space. Deliverables included high-quality video, photography, written transcripts, and a summary of findings. The collection is now part of the permanent Library of Congress archive.
What we did
Project design, participant selection, oral history interviews, video and photo production, transcription, findings synthesis
The result
20 interviews in the permanent Library of Congress collection, with an accompanying essay published on the American Folklife Center blog

K-12 Humanities Curriculum Development: NEH EDSITEment
In October 2024, Dismantle signed a one-year contract with the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop curriculum for EDSITEment, the NEH’s flagship K-12 humanities education platform. Working in close collaboration with NEH staff, we identified topics across U.S. History, Civics and Government, and World History, then developed inquiry-based teacher’s guides, lesson plans, and curricula for grades 3-5, 6-12, and AP levels.
Our process brought together scholarly research, drafting and revision, and coordination with subject matter experts, classroom teachers, and curriculum specialists — ensuring every deliverable was accurate, age-appropriate, learning standards aligned, and classroom ready. We were working ahead of schedule when the federal government discontinued the EDSITEment program in April 2025 as part of broader NEH downsizing. Our contract was terminated without fault, having submitted over 70% of proposed deliverables.
What we did
Curriculum design, scholarly research, lesson plan and teacher’s guide development, learning standards alignment, subject matter expert coordination

Brand Narrative & Founder Story: Hungry Ghost Coffee
Hungry Ghost Coffee had built one of Brooklyn’s most beloved independent café brands. The business had grown to 13 locations, as well as two cocktail bars and an ice cream parlor. They had devoted following and a genuinely compelling origin story. What they needed was a way to tell that story coherently across their businesses.
Dismantle conducted in-depth founder interviews and organizational and historical research to surface the values and history at the heart of the brand. The work traced owner Murat Uyaroglu’s upbringing in Istanbul’s coffeehouse culture through his arrival in Brooklyn and the opening of Hungry Ghost’s first location — connecting the personal history to the company’s identity in a way that felt earned rather than manufactured. The resulting narrative now lives across their website, team profiles, and brand communications.
What we did
Founder oral history interviews, organizational and historical research, brand narrative writing, website copy
The result
An integrated brand story — from Istanbul to Brooklyn — live across the Hungry Ghost, Sweet Polly, and Bar Francis websites and team pages
